Economic trend analysis for your sector

Analysis of the economic movements that shape demand, costs and regulation in your sector, translated into consequences for your planning rather than left as macroeconomic commentary.

The problem this service answers

Your planning exercise is starting and the assumptions in the model come from last year, adjusted by intuition. Nobody has checked whether the conditions that produced them still hold.

Economic commentary is abundant and mostly useless at company level, because it is written for an audience with no particular exposure. What matters to you is narrower: the movements affecting the buyers of your category, the costs in your chain, the regulation applying to your activity and the conditions of financing in your territories.

Trends also change the value of your existing positions. A shift in input costs modifies the economics of a channel, a change in public support redirects demand towards a technology, a regulatory calendar creates a replacement cycle, and a currency or logistics movement changes which territories are worth serving. Each of these is observable before it appears in your accounts.

What the assignment covers

The assignment starts by identifying your exposure. Which segments generate your demand, which inputs drive your costs, which regulations condition your activity, which territories carry your revenue and which financing conditions affect your customers. That exposure map determines which economic movements are worth following and which are noise for you.

We then observe the relevant institutional, sector and corporate publications, and read them against that map. The work is one of translation: a published movement becomes useful only when expressed as a consequence for a decision you are actually taking, such as a channel arbitration, an investment, a recruitment plan or the timing of a launch.

Deliveries state what has changed, how solidly it is established, and what it implies for your working assumptions. Divergent readings between sources are presented rather than resolved artificially, and where a movement is too recent to be interpreted with confidence, that is written down instead of being dressed as a conclusion.

How we work on it

  1. We map your economic exposure: demand, costs, regulation, territories, financing.
  2. We select the indicators and publications that actually inform that exposure.
  3. Relevant institutional and sector material is monitored over time.
  4. Movements are checked for revision and for consistency between sources.
  5. Each movement is translated into a consequence for your decisions.
  6. Working assumptions are reviewed periodically against observed developments.
  7. The indicator set is adjusted as your exposure or your activity changes.

Where the information comes from

Sources are selected with you at the start of the assignment and reviewed as the subject evolves.

  • Institutional and statistical publications covering your territories.
  • Sector federation and professional body analyses.
  • Regulatory calendars, consultations and published policy decisions.
  • Corporate publications and sector reporting on demand conditions.
  • Specialised economic and trade press covering your value chain.

Possible deliverables

The format is chosen with you. A single assignment can combine several of them.

  • A periodic analysis of movements affecting your exposure.
  • A commented indicator set relevant to your activity.
  • A note on the consequences for your working assumptions.
  • Alerts when a regulatory or economic change requires a rapid decision.
  • Support material for your planning and budget discussions.

Who this service is designed for

  • General management preparing a planning cycle.
  • Finance directors reviewing assumptions.
  • Industrial and procurement teams exposed to input movements.
  • Sector federations and professional organisations.
  • Investors assessing the environment of a holding.

What this service does not promise

This analysis describes and interprets observed movements. It contains no forecast presented as certainty, and no reading of economic conditions can assure that a plan built on it will hold.

How to start

Describe your activity, your territories and the assumptions you need to test. We come back with the exposure map and the indicators worth following over your planning horizon.

Questions about this service

Do you produce forecasts?

We produce scenarios with their conditions, not forecasts presented as facts. A useful output states what would have to happen for each scenario to hold and which observable indicators would confirm or invalidate it early. That form is usable in planning; a single predicted figure is not.

Is this relevant for a small company?

It is relevant whenever a company has concentrated exposure, which is often more true of small companies than large ones. A business dependent on one customer segment, one input or one regulatory regime has more to gain from following the right three indicators than a diversified group has from following thirty.

How does this relate to your market studies?

A market study describes a market at a date, in depth. Trend analysis follows the movements that will change it, continuously and at a higher level. Companies frequently begin with a study to establish the picture, then keep the subject under trend analysis so the picture does not silently become obsolete.

Tell us what you need to monitor

Describe your subject, your markets and your decision timeline. We study every request individually before proposing a monitoring set-up.

Every request is reviewed confidentially. No commitment is required to discuss a scope of work.
